GEAR Shopping for a set? What to look for
- American Mahjong needs 152 tiles at minimum. Many sets ship with 160 or more — extra jokers and blanks are common and fine.
- Check that your tiles and rack sizes match. Tiles that are too big for a rack are an annoyingly common surprise when buying pieces from different sellers.
- Read the listing for what's not included. Plenty of sets are tiles only — no rack, mat, or case.
- Pretty isn't the same as playable. Clear numbers and easy-to-tell suits matter more over a three-hour game than a fancy finish.

EVENTS Classes, tournaments & game days
Community and recreation centers, senior centers, and local organizations regularly run beginner classes and open play, and some ask you to bring a current card. Tournaments and charity game days pop up throughout the year, often run by local groups. We'll post specific events here as we can verify them rather than guess at dates.
